Sharp ePaper Display: how zero energy consumption and paper-like quality are turning heads

Zero-Energy-Consumption-1

The Sharp ePaper Display operates with zero power consumption during content playback, drawing only minimal power when content changes. This innovative technology marks a new era in energy-efficient signage and a ground-breaking step toward carbon neutrality.

By prioritising sustainable innovation, Sharp/NEC is bringing to market products which reduce consumption and minimise waste. The ePaper Display underlines this commitment, enabling businesses to significantly reduce their energy bills and make meaningful progress toward their sustainability targets.

The Sharp ePaper Display offers substantial potential for the carbon-neutral future of digital signage.

Its wide application potential has yet to be fully realised!

As a digital alternative to paper posters, the Sharp ePaper Display is ideal for applications requiring static content which is updated regularly. Applications such as POS promotions, menu boards and allergen information in retail and hospitality environments, and timetables, check-in and gate information in transportation environments.

Instantly updatable, Sharp ePaper Displays installed throughout the Spectra building at the University of Hertfordshire

Where dynamic always-on displays are inappropriate, and yet up to date information needs to be delivered, ePaper offers an enhanced communication method with compelling cost saving efficiencies. This benefit has already been embraced by Adam Harvey, Solution Architect - AV and Digital Media at the University of Hertfordshire, who has specified Sharp ePaper Displays for the new high-tech Spectra building. The first 50 units have already been deployed, installed on laboratory doors to update health and safety information – vital messaging conveying the risk status in each space.

Extraordinary paper-like quality, best in brightest environments

The term ePaper, or electronic paper, very accurately describes what this technology is. It has no backlight and therefore has no energy demands during content playback. This characteristic is what makes ePaper comparable to paper in that it requires ambient light to reflect upon its surface, so it appears brighter the higher the ambient light.

With full-colour capability enhanced by ACeP colour performance, ePaper delivers outstanding visual performances with excellent contrast, wide viewing angles, and fine resolution for an ergonomic content presentation that looks remarkably like a poster.

Almost unlimited installation flexibility

Ultra lightweight, the Sharp ePaper Display can be hung like a picture frame, placed on a table stand, or for more permanent installations it features VESA mounting. It receives power via USB-C and there is space to integrate either an optional battery such as a standard power pack, or a PoE to USB-C adapter. Since the display does not need to be positioned close to a power socket, it offers almost unlimited installation possibilities.

Changing content is easy! An integrated System on Chip supports seamless, secure and flexible content management. A very simple to use online settings tool enables the user to effortlessly set up the ePaper Display, customising and configuring parameters for multiple displays from one central location. Alternatively, a mobile app allows the user to very simply change settings and upload images to the ePaper Display by connecting a mobile device via Bluetooth. Sharp/NEC is partnering with an increasing number of third-party CMS providers to widen applications for larger estates.

Industry recognition for its substantial potential

Already holder of two awards, the iF Design Award and the rAVe (Pubs) Best of ISE 2024 Award, at the industry-leading AV Awards on 30th November, the Sharp ePaper Display won Visual Technology of the Year.

“In a category filled with outstanding entries, the judges ultimately recognised the winning submission as an innovative technology with substantial potential for future applications.”

The judges at InAVate Magazine have also recognised the huge potential of this ground-breaking technology as the Sharp ePaper Display is shortlisted as FINALIST for Display Technology of the Year ahead of an industry event at ISE 2025.

We’d greatly appreciate your vote for the Sharp ePaper Display, showing your support for sustainable innovation!
